Sanya Haitang Bay Resort

Hainan Island, China

Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture

Inspired by a native rock formation known as Five Finger Mountain, the island resort groups distinct but akin towers and creates a unique experience for every vacationer through a jagged, "rocky" exterior balcony.

The tower forms were generated parametrically to maintain usable room sizes and balcony depths while still bringing constant variation to the skin of the towers. No two rooms in any of the towers are alike to create an individuality that enforces a concept of sky villas.

The villas scattered through the site were also placed computationally to maximize views while maintaining privacy. The resultant configuration defines the masterplan and landscape for the rest of the development.
